The Mandela Day Marathon aims to symbolize the marathon Nelson Mandela undertook in laying the foundation for a democratic South Africa. The starting point of the race, Manaye Hall in Imbali, the venue for the All-In African Conference organised by the African National Congress on 25 March 1961 and ending at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick. It was at Manaye Hall that Madiba made a surprise appearance and addressed the gathering calling for the philosophy of ‘one man, one vote’. The greatest challenge of the race is the renown “Struggle Hill”, a grueling 9km hill from Edendale up to Hilton. The event encapsulates the life and spirit of former president Nelson Mandela.
